Upon our early weeks here in Uganda, we were told it was up to us (the T3 Interns living in the eMi compound) to finish the pizza oven by the end of the year...what?! So of course like the engineers we are, we got to work.
We inherited a few pieces of the puzzle but after assessing the bricks and the structural stability of the base and top pieces we decided to go a different direction with a few of the materials and design.
We first replaced the old bricks with some special fired bricks from the Industrial Area of town and we had the eMi workshop cut them into the right shape. Next we recast the base of the pizza oven onto the new stand with a greater thickness and a revised concrete mix. Once the base was recast, we laid some sand and leveled the bricks in the base.
Then we fixed the top and base pieces together and let that cure for a week. Next came the weather proofing which also cured for another week. Last step was to paint it and run some fires in it.
Finally we had our first pizza party and after a few pizzas (some burnt, some gooey) we got the hang of it and it ended up being a very successful first pizza night. Next we get to start hosting some eMi and neighborhood pizza parties and we are stoked!
