After being here about 4 months now, there are some things my fellow interns and I have learned the hard way and if you are thinking about doing an EMI internships, I figured I'd share some things we learned!
Bring a flashlight. The power goes out quite often and its good to have another light source besides your phone. Headlamps also work.
Don't bring anything white...The red dust, dirt, odors, sweat, and mystery stains of everyday life here will make it look dingy.
Also along #2 - if you are working in R&D bring some cheap work clothes because they will most likely get stained and ruined.
Girls bring a scarf to cover your head/hair for inevitable dusty boda-boda rides.
Don't sweat it when the power goes out and you have to take a cold shower. Typically the shower water has been sitting in the tanks being "heated" by the sun through the day so they're not polar plunges.
Be cautioned if you wear contacts that you might not be able to find contact lens solution easily - I have had to go to a specialty eye store and it's typically on the more expensive side.
Don't be afraid to dive in head first to friendships with your fellow coworkers and interns even though you will only be around a few months. They will be some of the most genuine and fulfilling relationships you are blessed with in this life.
There are some pretty good trees here for hammocks- even if you have to dodge a falling avocado or mango now and then.
Hats and sunglasses are a must.
Ear plugs. That's it. That's the tip if you ever want a sliver of peace and quiet.
Don't buy the cheapest pasta from the store here. Spend the extra $0.20 and save yourself from the mush.
Girls it is perfectly acceptable from wear hiking shoes on your dusty walk and bring nice shoes in your bag.
Bring a mini umbrella. Everyday. Everywhere.
