Small group study- culture Covenant

The office breaks into small groups on Wednesday mornings for discipleship groups during the first hour of the day. This past few months we did a small group study on the EMI-Uganda culture covenant.

The Culture Covenant was created last year to help define and remind us how each of us are responsible for creating, cultivating, and protecting the blended culture we have at EMI and the Kingdom inspired culture God desires among His people.

Diversity is one of EMI's three core values but living and working cross-culturally doesn't come naturally to any of us and many times it's described as a head-on collision.

During this study we took a deeper dive into each point outlined in the covenant and what God says about it in the Bible. We studied on:

  • Relationships

  • Leadership

  • Cultural diversity

  • Communication

  • Conflict resolution

  • Financial stewardship

  • Work as serving

The study into conflict resolution was definitely one of the more spirited conversations. It's a complex topic and it ties together so many layers of cultural differences and identity that it's tricky to navigate when you have many distinct cultures and individual experiences adding lenses to how we view and handle the underlying conflict. We talked about seeing the conflict through the lens of God though and how we should strive for peace (Romans 12,14), forgive others (Col.3), drop our pride (Matt 5) and be slow to speak and quick to listen (Matt 6).
