One of the really fun projects we are doing right now is The GEM Foundation playground. The GEM Foundation is a home and a safe space for abandoned, neglected, and abused children with special needs. They care for more than 45 children and provide full-time care, therapy, education, to help children reach their fullest potential.
EMI started working with GEM in 2017 for long-range planning, architectural and engineering design, and construction supervision on their 89-acre campus outside Kampala (The GEM Village). Since then, EMI has helped design and build three children's homes, administrative buildings, storage buildings, two assisted living homes and the directors residence.
We are currently under construction on two more phases of The GEM Village including a fourth children's home (seen in the background of the picture above), a dining pavilion, additional storage building, and the playground. The playground has been designed by landscape architects and inclusive play experts to accommodate for all of the children's needs and is possibly the first handicap-accessible playground in Uganda.
I got to go on a site visit the other day to the site where we met with the EMI construction team on site and got to take some great pictures (including some handstands). We attended the biweekly OAC meeting and prayed over the site and crew before heading the 2 hours back to Kajjansi.
