A few weekends ago we went to the Entebbe Botanical Gardens. We were suppose to leave in the morning, but it was raining and flooding that morning so we opted for a shorter afternoon trip. We walked up to the main road (re: mud story below) and caught taxis to Entebbe. It was about a 45 minute taxi ride (not because it is far, just because we were stopping every 3 minutes to let people off, pick people up, wait for a full van, etc...). We got to the Botanical Gardens and were immediately greeted by monkeys before heading off on a tour with a guide through the north portion of the gardens.
The upper part of the gardens had really spread out plans and trees from all parts of the world (Chinese bamboo, oak trees, Africana trees, Mexican cebia trees, etc) and the lower portion had the natural preserved flora and fauna of the Lake Victoria region.
The natural area was my favorite. It was gorgeous. It was apparently where they filmed the original 1930s Tarzan movie which was easy to see. There were tons of flowering vines and 500 year old trees towering up. Massive spiders were laced in the trees and trails of Siafu ants, with bites so bad they're known to make gorillas cry, made streams across the dirt paths.
The park was also weird because they let cars drive through it. There were large parties and loud music going on so it definitely felt more like Brackenridge Park on a nice Saturday afternoon than a botanical garden. The guide said the garden was 42 acres with about a mile of shoreline along Lake Victoria. There are also three different monkey clans fighting for territory in the park. Ha! All in all it was a great day!
Side note: I wore my chacos and of course within 10 minutes I had already stepped and sank in the rust-red-very-staining mud. I tried to rinse my foot off in a channel of water flowing down the street, only to then have some slimy white stuff get stuck in my toes and start foaming as I walked. I wanted to puke. I had to use all my drinking water to rinse my feet off and then proceeded to walk around the rest of the day with wet feet (stained rust red) and no drinking water. *Facepalm*
